BBQ Charcoal

Ash Content

Ash content is the inorganic residue left after charcoal is fully combusted, measured by ASTM D1762 or D3174; lower ash means a cleaner burn and is a key BBQ quality signal.

A drying stage removes the water introduced with the starch binder before briquettes are graded and packed. Residual moisture is later determined together with ash, fixed carbon and volatile matter by proximate analysis under ASTM D1762.

Milled coconut shell charcoal powder is the input to the mixing stage, and its particle size distribution governs how densely the briquette presses and how well it holds together. Mechanical durability of the pressed briquette is checked by drop-shatter test.
